Meet Dudley! He is a pure bred miniature poodle. He is about three years old and weighs about 18 pounds. He was surrendered by his owner who could no longer care for him. He is house and crate trained. After having Dudley for a couple weeks it has become clear that Dudley has some behavioral issues to work through. He is an amazing, loving, loyal dog. However, when he becomes secure in his environment and bonded to his people, he views every other person entering the home as a threat and will attempt to protect what he feels is his. He growls, barks, shows and snaps his teeth, and has even NIPPED someone putting their hand down in front of his face to smell. The nip did not break the skin or cause injury. Being a certified trainer, I currently have Dudley with me in my very busy household taking this opportunity to do some desensitizing and training with Dudley. He is a fearful dog who comes out with an act of being aggressive to handle his fear and up to now this action has worked for him. Dudley will need a strong leader who will not allow him to be the pack leader. When guests come to the home they will need to be told to ignore Dudley, NO touch, NO eye contact, NO speaking to him. Once the are seated Dudley will investigate by smelling them, by continuing to ignore Dudley, he will accept the guests and will make friends. Most people first reaction to a barking dog is to bend down and offer the dog their hand to smell. With many dogs this is the worst thing a person can do as this gesture is interpreted as a threat.Dudley loves to snuggle and cuddle with "his person". Dudley will make a great furry family member for the right family! The adoption fee is $200.00. His adoption fee helps allow Perfect Paws to provide all animals with current, age appropriate vaccinations which include, DHLPP, Kennel Cough and Rabies (if the pet is at least 16 weeks old), and spay/neuter when necessary. The fee also helps with the cost of deworming; heart worm testing (if the pet is at least 1 year old), heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick prevention for animals cared for through the rescue. He will go home with a collar, leash, training DVD, and vaccination record.
